1.19.07 - ITPA Salutes Michael Brecker
In The Pocket Artists would like to take a moment to salute the passing of Michael Brecker. Nearly every saxophonist you know owes a debt of gratitude to Michael Brecker for showing them the vast melodic and tonal potential of the saxophone. As a result of his instrumental and compositional innovations, Brecker, an 11-time Grammy Award winner, was the most studied contemporary instrumentalist in music schools throughout the world.

During his acclaimed career, Brecker played with a who's who of jazz and pop giants including Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, Quincy Jones, Joni Mitchell, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Aretha Franklin, Parliament Funkadelic, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Pat Metheny, Aerosmith, George Benson, Frank Sinatra, David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Rick James, Frank Zappa, Harry Connick, James Brown, Dave Grusin, Ringo Starr, Steely Dan, Dave Brubeck, John Lennon, Lou Reed, Michael Bolton, Carly Simon, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, Billy Joel and Elton John.

Although he was very sick, Brecker completed a final album just two weeks ago, which will be released on Heads Up International in the spring of 2007. The as-yet-untitled recording includes pianists Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau, guitarist Pat Metheny, drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist John Patitucci. Visit www.michaelbrecker.com for more details on the release of Brecker's final recorded work.

In The Pocket Artists would like to take a moment (if not a month) to salute the passing of James Brown. The "hardest-working man in show business" was a pioneer in Funk and Soul music whom we believe should also be known as the original purveyor of what is known today as Hip Hop and Rap. His 'pocket' has deeply inspired everyone one of us who loves groove music and his life of hard work and seemingly boundless energy will continue to inspire touring musicians in all genres to persevere despite adversity and tour hard for generations to come. Pass the Peas James.
